Grant Project: Communication For All!

Jamieson Students gain confidence and independence using AAC

Several students at Jamieson School have had access to augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) voice output communication aides (VOCAs) during this school year thanks to a generous grant from the Yeoman’s Fund of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois in September 2009. These students have limited verbal skills as a result of a variety of communication disorders that make it difficult to produce understandable speech. Prior to receiving the new VOCAs, students relied on gesturing, word approximations, and sometimes acting-out behaviors in order to communicate with teachers and other school staff. They had limited opportunities to interact with other students because they could not communicate. Now they are able to express wants and needs in the classroom and enjoy leisure activities, such as playing board games with their classmates, using their VOCAs. They are even learning to make jokes and tease each other-something every child needs to know!

New U.S. Department of Education Race and Ethnicity Data Standards

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) will use the new categories starting with data to be reported for the 2010-11 school year.

This requires school districts to re-identify race and ethnicity for all students—and the identification is to be done by parents or guardians. If a student's parents or guardians decline to indicate race and/or ethnicity, staff from Peoria Public Schools will identify both race and ethnicity, as required by law, through observer identification.

Parents who have enrolled in Family Access can complete this process online. The online identification process should be completed no later than March 31, 2010.

For Directions on how to complete this read the following steps:

  • Click on the PARENTS page at the top of the webpage.
  • Go to ADMISSION DOCUMENTS
  • Below click on the Message Center Letter.
  • After reading the letter, click Student Race Ethnicity Directions to find out how to update your Family Access.
